What is Holistic Nutrition?

Holistic Nutrition: Getting back to basics

The overall idea behind holistic nutrition is about getting back to basics. It is about eating food that is natural, alive and of good quality. Nutrition is one of the key factors to attaining optimal health and well-being. Healthcare should be a system where personal responsibility and a co-operative relationship between practitioner and client exist.

Poor nutrition is a major cause of a wide range of health disorders. The range of conflicting information out there is often confusing and misleading. Holistic nutrition guides people through the maze of information about different foods, supplements and diets that are on the market, filtering out the important messages from all the available sources—journal articles, magazines, books, TV, etc.

A registered holistic nutritionist (RHN) works with clients to identify and help correct nutritional imbalances. RHNs are qualified to design personalized diet and lifestyle programs and suggest specific foods and supplements that optimize health and nourish the body, mind and spirit. A RHN cannot diagnose a disease; his or her role is to serve as an educator on nutrition.
